Thousands of entrepreneurs and companies want to start selling on Etsy, but they don’t have a clear roadmap for how to get started. Based on the experience I’ve gained over the years, I’ve prepared a comprehensive 47-STEP ROADMAP for anyone who wants to start selling on Etsy.
1. Learn About Etsy Before You Start Selling
The first thing you should do before starting to sell is learn about Etsy. I think a great place to start is by watching the videos on my YouTube channel. Before you begin selling, I strongly recommend doing thorough research using all the resources available online.

2. Read Etsy’s Rules and Policies
Before you start selling on Etsy, you absolutely need to read the platform’s rules and policies. My own account was suspended because I started selling without reading them.
You cannot sell every type of product on Etsy. First, learn the rules, and only then move on to the process of opening your shop.
Read Etsy’s seller policies: https://www.etsy.com/legal/sellers/
3. Study Successful Etsy Shops
Take a close look at shops that started selling on Etsy before you and have become successful. Research their owners and try to learn from their experiences.
You can also watch the live broadcasts I’ve done with successful Etsy shop owners to learn from their experiences and insights.
4. Decide Which Product Category You Want to Sell In
Decide which category you want to focus on, such as handmade products, craft supplies, vintage items, or digital products.
Many products sold on Etsy are personalized items or products that can be given as gifts.
I recommend choosing a category based on the types of products you can manufacture or source.
Instead of selling simple products where you cannot compete on price with Chinese manufacturers, focus on customizable or personalized products.
5. Focus on a Specific Niche
Etsy doesn’t particularly encourage selling products from many different categories within the same shop.
Research what you can sell within your chosen category. I especially recommend focusing on a specific niche.
You can explore categories such as jewelry, clothing and gifts where print providers are particularly strong.
6. Avoid Investing in Inventory at the Beginning
Instead of manufacturing and storing thousands of dollars’ worth of products when you’re just starting out, focus on products that can be manufactured and shipped as orders come in.
Don’t invest in inventory for products when you don’t even know whether they will sell.
7. Find Reliable Production Partners
You don’t have to manufacture everything yourself to sell on Etsy.
You can find reliable production partners who will manufacture and ship products whenever you make a sale.
For example, you can design a product yourself and have a manufacturer produce it for you.
Find trustworthy production partners and request pricing for the products you plan to sell.
8. Calculate Your Profit Margins and Set the Right Prices
To determine the right selling price, calculate your profit margin and analyze your competitors’ prices.
Find out exactly how much Etsy will deduct in fees.
Make sure you know your production costs and shipping expenses accurately.
9. Prepare High-Quality Product Images
Take professional photos of your products or hire someone to do it for you.
Make sure your images are attractive and high quality.
Product photography is one of the most important aspects of online selling. Since customers cannot physically touch the products, they make purchasing decisions based on the images and videos they see.
Nowadays, we use ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE for almost everything related to this process.
10. Conduct Keyword Research While Preparing Your Photos
While preparing your product photos, conduct keyword research and create the listings for the first products you plan to upload.
You can use analytics tools such as eRank and EtsyHunt to help with this research.
11. Optimize Your Titles, Descriptions, and Tags
If you want your products to appear on the first pages of Etsy search results, you need to pay close attention to your product titles, descriptions, and tags.
Use the keywords you’ve researched that have the highest search volumes when creating your listings.
I recommend using the keywords Etsy itself provides in its seller dashboard.
12. Pay Special Attention to Your Main Photo and the First Words of Your Title
The first few words of your product title and your main product photo are especially important.
When shoppers search for a keyword, they see dozens of products in the results.
They usually decide whether to click on a listing based on the main image and the first four or five words of its title.
13. Establish Your Business Before Opening Your Shop
You can open an Etsy shop without having a registered company, but my recommendation is to establish a company.
You can even start with a sole proprietorship in the beginning.
If you’re planning to build a long-term business, I personally recommend establishing a company in the United States.
14. Open a Business Bank Account
After establishing your company in the United States, you should also open a bank account to receive your Etsy payments.
We used to use Wise more frequently, but nowadays we mostly use Mercury.
You can also open a bank account online.
You don’t need to travel to the United States to open a bank account.
15. Open Your Etsy Shop Only When You’re Fully Prepared
Once all your preparations are complete, open your Etsy shop.
When you open a new shop, Etsy will give your products additional visibility.
That’s why your product listings and photos should be ready before you launch.
To take advantage of the benefits Etsy offers new shops, make sure everything is prepared before opening your store.
16. Complete Your Shop Settings
You can open your Etsy shop by following the step-by-step video I’ve shared on my YouTube channel.
After opening your shop, complete all your store settings, including:
Shop banner
Etsy Plus
Seller story
Shipping settings
Other shop configurations
17. Watch Out for Scam and Spam Messages
Some people will notice that you’ve just opened a new Etsy shop and will try to get money from you.
You may receive fraudulent messages such as:
“Your account could not be verified. Click this banking link.”
Never click on links in these types of scam or spam messages.
Simply mark them as spam.
18. Start Running Etsy Ads After the First 15 Days
Etsy won’t allow you to run ads during your first 15 days.
After those 15 days, activate your advertisements to drive traffic to your shop.
Initially, Etsy will allow you to set a daily advertising budget of around $5–$25.
As your sales increase, you’ll be able to increase your advertising budget.
19. Focus on the Products Etsy Promotes
Etsy will show a few products from your shop to a larger number of potential customers.
If you identify these products and focus on them, you can become successful.
You don’t need to upload thousands of products when you’re starting out.
As I mentioned, Etsy will already give a few of your products significantly more exposure than the others.
20. Don’t Upload All Your Products at Once
Don’t upload all your products at the same time.
Remember, you won’t be able to activate advertising during the first 15 days.
You can start by uploading one new product every day.
Each time you upload a product, Etsy will give it some exposure and test its performance.
If customers respond positively to it, Etsy will show it to even more people.
21. Be Patient With Your First Sales
When you first open your shop, sales will come in very slowly.
If you want your shop to generate sales quickly, you can attract traffic by offering products for free or at very large discounts.
However, in most cases, this isn’t necessary.
If you research popular products on Etsy and list them in your shop, traffic will eventually come.
But if you list products with very low search volumes, you’ll receive very little traffic.
22. Increase Your Product Listings After the First 15 Days
Once the first 15 days have passed and you’ve activated your advertisements, you can step on the gas.
Research trending and popular products every day and add at least 4–5 new products to your shop daily.
Make Etsy recognize that you’re actively managing and developing your shop so that it gives your products more visibility.
23. Activate Free Shipping and Offsite Ads
To generate more sales, go to your shipping settings and join Etsy’s Free Shipping Guarantee for US Orders Over $35 program.
Also, go to your shop settings and activate Offsite Ads.
24. Find a Reliable Shipping Partner
Before you start receiving orders, make an agreement with a shipping intermediary that can handle your deliveries.
In the beginning, your sales volume will probably be too low to work directly with shipping companies such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL.
That’s why I recommend working with shipping intermediaries like ShipEntegra, Shipstation which already have agreements with these major carriers.
25. Make Sure Your Products Are Packaged Properly
When you receive an order, your responsibility is to package the product and hand it over to the shipping company.
At this stage, make sure your packaging is both attractive and appropriate for the product.
Package your items securely to prevent damage during transportation.
26. Submit Accurate Orders to Your Production Partners
When an order comes in, enter all the information accurately and completely into your production partner’s dashboard, such as Rexven.
Make sure you provide the correct size, color, and high-resolution design file.
If your design quality is poor, the printed result won’t look good either.
Make sure your manufacturer is honest, has sufficient production capacity, maintains high quality standards, and can manufacture and ship your products within the timeframes you’ve promised your customers.
27. Ship Your Orders as Quickly as Possible
Try to ship your products as quickly as possible to increase your sales.
The faster your products reach your customers, the happier they’ll be, and the more likely they are to leave positive reviews.
As your number of reviews increases, you’ll notice that your sales increase as well.
28. Don’t Depend on a Single Manufacturer
Never rely on just one manufacturer.
As your order volume increases, manufacturers may struggle to keep up with demand.
Work with multiple manufacturers capable of producing the same products.
That way, if one manufacturer experiences a problem, you can continue fulfilling orders through another.
We experienced serious difficulties with this issue in the past.
That’s why, within the Rexven supply system, we work with multiple reliable manufacturers capable of producing the same products.
We distribute orders to manufacturers according to their available production capacity, ensuring they only receive as many orders as they can handle.
29. Run Daily Discounts and Promotions
Apply daily discounts to all your products.
Create promotional campaigns and discount coupons.
Sales on Etsy increase significantly during special occasions and holidays.
That’s why you should prepare special promotional campaigns for these important dates.
30. Respond to Customer Messages Quickly
Answer every question your customers ask on Etsy as quickly as possible.
Since personalized products often involve special requests and unique situations, customers will frequently contact you before purchasing.
By providing fast, clear, and helpful responses, you can encourage people who message you to purchase your products.
31. Use Pinterest to Drive Traffic to Your Etsy Shop
Pinterest is an excellent source of traffic for Etsy sellers.
Create a Pinterest account and upload your products there as well.
When Etsy sees that your listings are receiving traffic from external sources, it will start showing your products to more people.
Remember, more impressions mean more sales.
32. Use Social Media and Google Ads to Attract More Customers
To generate additional traffic, you can actively use social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, as well as Google Ads.
As I mentioned in the previous point, Etsy will be very pleased when you bring external traffic to its platform.
33. Optimize Your Listings for Special Occasions
Update your products and listings according to special occasions, such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and other holidays.
During these periods, add promotional graphics highlighting your discounts to your product images.
Certain keywords experience significant increases in search volume during these occasions.
Identify those keywords and update your product titles, descriptions, and tags accordingly.
34. Create Multiple Listings for the Same Product
To increase your visibility, list the same product 4–5 times using different combinations of titles and images.
It’s not always clear which product Etsy will choose to promote.
That’s why you should create different listings for your products.
This is also important for understanding which images and titles perform better.
If you’re selling products featuring your own designs, aim to list at least 4–5 different designs every day.
35. Improve Your Profit Margins Through Bulk Shipping
To increase your profit margins, consider shipping products in bulk to an intermediate warehouse instead of shipping them individually.
Orders can then be fulfilled directly from that warehouse.
Of course, this strategy is only suitable if you’re selling ready-made products.
Unfortunately, implementing this system is much more difficult when you’re selling personalized products.
You can start using this approach as your sales volume grows.
36. Focus on Bulk Orders to Increase Profitability
When customers message you before making a purchase, always be polite and helpful.
With good communication, you may be able to sell 10 or even 20 units to a single customer.
Instead of focusing only on individual orders, try to attract BULK ORDERS from businesses, large families, or groups organizing events such as bachelor and bachelorette parties.
Remember that bulk orders can significantly increase your profit margins.
Because all products in a bulk order can be shipped in the same package, your shipping cost per item may drop to as little as $1.
This can dramatically increase your profit margin.
37. Add Lower-Priced Variations to Your Products
To increase sales, add lower-priced variations to your product listings.
This is because Etsy displays the price of the lowest-priced variation in search results and on the main page.
38. Continuously Monitor Your Competitors
Regularly analyze competitors within your category.
Discover new products and add items that are selling well for your competitors to your own catalog.
Read customer reviews on competing products.
Identify the problems customers are experiencing and use that feedback to improve your own products.
39. Meet the Requirements to Become a Star Seller
Make sure you meet Etsy’s requirements to become a Star Seller.
There are three particularly important criteria:
Responding quickly to customer messages.
Maintaining a high customer review rating.
Shipping orders on time.
40. Build Strong Customer Relationships and Protect Your Shop Rating
Once an order has been shipped, send the customer a warm, personalized thank-you message using their name.
Include information about their shipment.
Even if a customer is being unreasonable, protecting your shop rating is extremely important.
Instead of receiving a one-star review, you may sometimes need to sacrifice your profit by sending a free replacement product or issuing a refund.
After the product has been delivered, politely ask the customer to leave a review.
Use a friendly and sincere tone, explaining that their feedback helps you improve your shop.
41. Continuously Optimize Your Ads and Shop Performance
Regularly review your advertising statistics and shop analytics.
Use this data to continuously optimize your performance.
But how exactly can you optimize your shop?
42. Stop Advertising Products That Don’t Generate Sales
You may have uploaded dozens of products to your shop, but many of them will barely sell at all.
That’s why you should regularly analyze your shop statistics.
Identify products that consume your advertising budget without generating sales.
If you’re losing money on these products, stop running ads for them.
43. Eliminate Unprofitable Advertising Keywords
Even products that sell very well won’t necessarily be profitable for every keyword.
Etsy may show your products for irrelevant search terms, causing you to waste money on advertising.
Identify the keywords that generate losses and turn off advertising for those terms.
Keep advertising active for the keywords that generate profits.
44. Increase Your Customer Reviews
Build strong relationships with your customers and try to increase your number of reviews as quickly as possible.
You can also include thoughtful gifts or handwritten notes inside your product packages.
Having positive reviews displayed beneath your products can significantly increase your sales.
45. Protect Your Designs and Intellectual Property
Other sellers may copy the products you’re selling in your Etsy shop.
Some may even start using your brand name.
That’s why you should begin the necessary patent, copyright, and trademark registration processes for your designs and products.
This will help protect the effort and investment you’ve put into building your business.
46. Avoid Copyright and Trademark Infringement
Stay away from selling products featuring protected brands or copyrighted designs, such as Nike, Marvel, or Taylor Swift, without the necessary authorization.
If your shop receives too many copyright infringement complaints, Etsy may shut it down.
And if the rights holders refuse to withdraw their complaints, your shop may never be reopened.
47. Open Multiple Etsy Shops to Expand Your Business
Etsy doesn’t want you to create a single shop that sells products from every possible category.
However, if you want to sell products in different categories, you’re allowed to open multiple shops.
For example, you can have:
One shop selling jewelry
Another shop selling T-shirts
A third shop selling gift items
Once you’ve gained experience managing your first shop, you can open additional shops to increase your overall sales volume.
